Founded in 1973, the program was the first PhD of its kind in the world. The 52-credit program for occupational therapists will provide you with the knowledge and skills to further your work in the profession as a researcher, scholar, and educator. You will take courses in research methods and analyses, advanced occupational therapy, and other doctoral-level courses both within the department and through departments and disciplines across NYU.

Core Course Sequence

Prospective students with a master's or entry-level OTD degree will complete the program in 52 credits. NYU graduates with a master's degree in post-professional occupational therapy, will complete the program by completing 42 credits. All students will participate in coursework, which culminates in the completion of a dissertation. You will have the flexibility to pursue your studies on either a full-time or part-time basis, allowing you to tailor your academic journey to suit your individual needs and circumstances. Whether full-time or part-time, the program offers you a rigorous yet supportive environment where you can advance your knowledge, skills, and expertise in occupational therapy research.

Culminating Experience

The program combines intensive course work, rigorous research experience, and collaboration with faculty mentors who are pushing the boundaries of OT research. With their guidance, you’ll develop and defend a dissertation. Current student research includes a wide range of topics such as the mental health needs of adults who have experienced a stroke, intervention efforts for children with developmental disabilities, and research to inform practice for individuals with cognitive impairments.
