The 30-credit MAT in Teaching Science, Grades 7–12 (Initial Certification) equips you with the tools and training to teach science and build scientific curricula, serving students of varying abilities and backgrounds. Designed to help you transform how science is taught to teenagers, you will learn varying teaching methods, innovative uses of technology to support students' learning environments, and critical leadership skills to ensure that you and your students thrive. The program empowers you with a holistic approach to education, innovation, and exploration.
This program is open to participants who have a bachelor’s degree but who are not yet certified to teach.
Core Course Sequence
You’ll take pedagogical core courses in inquiries in teaching and learning, adolescent learners in urban contexts, and issues in special education policy. You’ll participate in workshops in world language education, specialized fieldwork in Math education and language and literacy acquisition, and two semesters of mentored student teaching. The program culminates with a research project focused on identifying how student success in science is measured in both the classroom and larger school settings.
