MA, Teaching Social Studies and Students with Disabilities, Initial Certification

The MA in Teaching Social Studies and Students with Disabilities (Initial Certification) equips you with the tools and training needed to meet the rising demand for dual-certified secondary education teachers. Designed to help you meet the needs of students with disabilities and other learning challenges, you will learn to develop curriculum to meet a wide array of student needs. This program also allows you to extend your certification to work with students in grades 5 and 6. 

This program is open to participants who have a bachelor’s degree but who are not yet certified to teach.

Core Course Sequence

You’ll take pedagogical core courses both social studies and special education, covering topics of language and literacy Acquisition and development, adolescent learners in urban contexts, and issues in special education policy. You’ll participate in workshops in world language education as well as specialized fieldwork in both secondary social studies education and special education through two mentored student teaching experiences. The program culminates with a seminar course designed to help students develop their own effective educational practices to support student needs across multiple settings.
