Fellows Program

Education and Social Policy, MA

This highly selective program will help talented full-time master's students develop a deeper and fuller understanding of education policy research by giving them an opportunity to participate on faculty-led research teams conducting innovative work. This is an extremely valuable experience for young scholars to learn about current trends in the field

Fellows will receive a $5,000 stipend to participate on a faculty-led research team at the Institute for Education and Social Policy during their second and third semesters of study ($2,500 each semester).  We attempt to match you with faculty whose research fits with your interests, although it depends on availability.

Fellows will:

  • Attend team meetings, read background materials, help to formulate hypotheses, review and discuss research techniques, strategies, dilemmas, data, and findings.
  • Participate on research teams according to their interests. Recent projects have focused on special education reform, summer employment, teacher pre-service training and professional development, housing, and school food policies.
  • Develop highly-marketable skills in data management and have the ability to gain hands-on experience doing research.
  • Attend monthly research seminars in the Department of Applied Statistics, Social Science, and Humanities to learn about current research in the field, discuss research strategies and approaches, and consider applications of research findings to local, state, or national policy.

The EDSP Fellowship has provided me with my most valuable experience at NYU thus far. I worked on several projects including a school choice intervention study and one looking at segregation in NYC schools. The Fellowship was an excellent opportunity to reinforce and apply things I learned in class and helped prepare me for my Capstone project as well as for jobs after graduation.
