Your New Student Seminar instructor will serve as your primary advisor throughout your time as an MCC major. Advisors offer guidance, but monitoring degree progress and seeking advisement is always your responsibility.
MCC offers several types of advising options:
Primary Advisor Meetings: Students may make an appointment with their primary advisor to discuss their program of study or to solve complex registration issues, either in person or virtually. Primary advising meetings are also appropriate for discussing internship and career goals, study abroad options, and personal issues that may arise. Students wanting to make a primary advisor appointment should use their advisor's individual NYU Connect appointment calendar (links in the below footer).
Walk-In Advising: Basic registration issues can be addressed through walk-in advising, such as completing a drop/add form, discussing a pass/fail option, submitting an internship registration form, or obtaining a course permission form. An advisor is available for walk-in advising Monday-Thursday, 10am-4pm.
Email Advisement: Students should use email to pose basic questions that can be answered quickly and concisely. For in-depth questions, students should schedule a primary advisor meeting.
Zoom/Google Hangout Meetings: When students elect to complete a semester abroad or travel home to countries outside the US, MCC advisors are available to video chat with students through Zoom or Google Hangout. It is important for students to remain in contact with the Department and receive quality advising even when traveling internationally.
Undergraduate Advising Handbook: Our advising handbook is a "one-stop-shop" for departmental and university policies and procedures. We encourage students to access our handbook anytime they have a question, the answer is likely there!
Peer Mentors: The MCC Peer Mentor Program promotes student involvement and retention by connecting new students to student mentors, who offer valuable departmental and university information. Trained and supervised by academic advisors, peer mentors are able to assist new students in finding accurate registration and advisement information. They serve as Teaching Assistants in New Student Seminar, hold weekly mentoring office hours, assist in organizing departmental programming, and represent MCC at admissions and recruitment events. For more information about the Peer Mentor Program, please contact Ivan Makar.
Registration
Advisors cannot clear students over the phone or via email under any circumstances.
Students have two options for obtaining registration clearance each semester: individual and group sessions. Information on when to sign up for these registration clearance sessions will be emailed each semester. To be cleared to register, students currently studying abroad should email their primary advisor with a proposed schedule for the upcoming semester. Those preparing to go abroad will be invited to attend a special pre-registration meeting to get clearance for registration.
Students should come to their pre-registration advising appointments (individual or group) prepared with a proposed list of courses and track their progress on their digital program of study. Students are encouraged to fill out the registration worksheet tab of their program of study in advance to help plan course selection.
Registering for Classes with Albert
Once students have obtained clearance, they will be eligible to register via Albert, NYU’s registration system. Students can access Albert through their NYUHome account. Albert's functionality includes course search; registration time and status; personal schedule, grades, and transcripts. For step-by-step directions on navigating Albert, please refer to this tutorial.
Deadlines
It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of all registration deadlines. Registration deadlines are posted on the University Registrar’s academic calendar.
Pass/Fail Option
Students in the MCC major can take up to 32 credits of their non-major courses on a pass/fail basis. It is a student’s responsibility to fill out ALL personal and course information on the form before submitting to their advisor for approval. Students pass the course when they receive a “D” or better. Once the form is submitted, students cannot rescind the pass/fail option. This means that students cannot change their elected pass/fail status if they discover they are getting an “A” in the course. The transcript will read “P.”
Course Waitlists
Waitlists are active through the first week of class. Students will not be notified if they become enrolled in a course for which they have been waitlisted, therefore they must check their schedules frequently. It is at the professor’s discretion to allow any over-enrollment once a course is closed. Waitlisted courses count against students' maximum allowable credit load (i.e. if a student is registered for 16 credits, Albert will not allow them to waitlist a course for three credits since it would exceed the maximum 18 credit load.)
Leave of Absence or Withdrawal from the University
Students who need to break their attendance for one or more semesters, or students who wish to withdraw completely from the University, should make an appointment with their advisor.
Important MCC Forms
Registration Clearance Worksheet Students should complete this worksheet on their digital program of study with a proposed schedule each semester and bring it to the registration clearance appointment.
Program of Study Degree Requirement Checklist Students should track their own degree progress on their digital program of study provided by the department. This checklist will assist students in tracking degree requirements and planning courses for future semesters. Students in the combined GPH/MCC program should use this checklist.
