Degree Details

Official Degree Title

Bachelor of Science in Educational Theatre and Master of Arts in Theatre for Social and Civic Engagement

Format
Full-time
Credits
143
128 credits for the BS; 36 credits for the MA with up to 21 credits meeting the requirements of both degrees

BS students can apply as early as the spring of their sophomore year and as late as the fall of their senior year. Double majors whose primary school/major is not Steinhardt/Educational Theatre and students in the Ed Theatre Minor are not eligible.

You will choose to concentrate your BS studies in one of three specialized pathways at the end of your sophomore year – Drama in EducationApplied Theatre, or Theatre Performance and Production – and demonstrate your knowledge and expertise in a culminating field experience and senior seminar. You can also choose a double major or minor, taking courses across NYU. In the MA, you will then specialize in an additional area of study different from the one you chose for the BS – Drama in EducationApplied Theatre, or Play Production for Artists and Educators.

Throughout your degree, you’ll gain:

  • A foundation in educational theatre, acting, directing, theatre history, stagecraft, and design
  • A full liberal arts education with core courses in history, philosophy, language, literature, sociology, science, and math
  • An investigation of options for teaching or performing in a wide range of contexts

Your faculty and advisors will collaborate with you to create a program that authentically reflects your burgeoning interests, needed support, and relevant expertise, ensuring that you learn:

  • How to design, implement, and evaluate culturally responsive theatre by and for myriad constituents
  • How to appraise and analyze the changing roles of theatre and education within complex and politicized transnational spaces
  • How to identify gaps in the field from theoretical, practical, and aesthetic perspectives, generating new knowledge accordingly
  • How to formulate, implement, and modify teaching and learning strategies using drama frameworks to explore content
  • How to experiment in the creation and presentation of theatre in formal or informal settings, using a variety of methods and structures

Teaching and Performance Opportunities

You'll have on- and off-campus opportunities to develop teaching and performance skills and cutting-edge approaches to theatre making. Our performance facilities include the iconic Provincetown Playhouse and the Black Box Theatre, which host three major productions a year in addition to play festivals and site-specific performances.

Study Abroad

Study away for a semester in one of NYU's many global academic centers, or take part in Drama in Youth in England.

Alumni pursue aesthetic, educational, and administrative opportunities that do not require teacher certification, including positions at private and community colleges, arts organizations, galleries, museums, educational outreach centers, behavioral health and prevention facilities, community and housing programs, youth and adult detainment centers, and theatre/arts agencies

You’ll also be well prepared to continue your graduate study in the form of a terminal degree, seeking an EdD or PhD in a related field.

Curriculum

This 143-credit dual degree combines arts-based inquiry, reflective studio practice, and justice-centered praxis to equip you to collaborate with community members and arts organizations in the pursuit of social change.
