You will complete a range of liberal arts core courses; music core courses, including music theory and analysis, music history, aural comprehension, and keyboard skills; and music specialization courses, such as orchestration and conducting, working closely with renowned composition faculty. You'll learn how to use industry-standard music technology.

You may also choose from two concentrations:

  • In Screen Scoring, you’ll study contemporary scoring techniques and orchestration and recording for film.

  • In Contemporary Production and Songwriting, you’ll study the art and craft of writing, producing, and recording songs, and the business structure of the music industry.

You will have multiple opportunities to have your concert works performed in concerts, residencies, and readings by NYU performance groups, such as the NYUO1 orchestra and NYU Percussion Ensemble.

You'll collaborate with performers, dancers, and actors in NYU Steinhardt's Music Technology, Jazz Studies, and Instrumental and Vocal Performance programs, as well as with other New York City musicians and artists.

You'll also participate in our weekly Composers Forum, where you will meet and work with world-renowned composers and performers, prepare two student showcases per semester, and attend highlights in the New York City new music concert season.

You'll have the unique opportunity to study music abroad at NYU Prague or NYU Paris, receiving specialized music training in music composition, music history and theory, music performance, and other related topics of study.
