Advanced Certificate, Tonmeister Studies

The Tonmeister Advanced Certificate is a 15-24 credit course in Music Technology suitable for students who have already earned a master's degree in music technology and/or recording. A Tonmeister supervises artistic and technical personnel during live broadcasts, the production of music, and audio recording. Tonmeisters work in a variety of areas in the field of sound production, including radio, film, education, audio recording, and product design.

Core Course Requirements

The certificate program will familiarize you with specialized Tonmeister technology.  You will learn and develop critical ear training along with skills in audio production through studies in theory and technology, as well as an internship.

Applicants must demonstrate a substantial background in music theory, recording technology, electronics, and acoustics. If your primary instrument is not piano, you must demonstrate basic piano skills and be able to read and transpose directly from score. An entrance portfolio of recorded works and an interview is required to demonstrate technical know-how, prior music production experience, and commitment to the recording arts.

Expected Outcomes

Producing classical music is the primary terminal focus of the certificate program, although other genres of acoustic and electro-acoustic music apply to the field, including modern classical, jazz, world, rock, and folk music.
