The work of mental health clinicians will be the focus of study. The complexity of the clinician’s trauma work will be considered through clinical presentation by clinicians, readings, & discussions. Topics include: the meaning & experience of trauma, interventions in clinical trauma work (such as child abuse, sexual abuse, rape, human trafficking, battering, racism, & war & its aftermath, terrorism & political action); & working with natural disasters. There will be academic autopsies of case material.
Students will explore, through improvisation, with a wide range of instruments and the voice, their personal relationship to music, music as self-expression, and music as a form of communication.Through this exploration students will develop a deeper understanding of how music is used with clients.
Culturally attuned interventions consider the sociocultural, psychological & developmental factors in treatment. Current research for clients struggling with addictions & those involved in judicial proceedings will be shared. Communities impacted by social injustices & art therapy methodology to effectively, legally & ethically serve these specialized populations will be discussed. Engaging clients to address trauma & violence needs a broad lens that also includes issues of societal inequality. Guest lectures will supplement course learning.

Essential to good clinical practice is the use of treatment strategies to the trajectory of recovery of physical function and ultimately occupational performance. This course will use a seminar, laboratory, and workshop model to explore the intervention processes for hand and upper limb nerve disorders that are traumatic or chronic in nature. This course will address nerve injuries in continuity that frequently present as cumulative trauma disorders between tendon and nerve involvement and the subsequent appropriate intervention strategies.
Introduction to contemporary issues of clinical practice in communication disorders across the lifespan. Emphasis on integration of previous coursework with direct clinical observations of diagnostic & treatment sessions. Introduction to clinical settings through study of current methods of standardized & non-standardized assessment procedures, client interviewing, treatment planning, clinical report writing, & implementation of treatment plans. Each student will complete 25 hours of supervised clinical observation outside of class.
Advanced study of the effects of disease on nutrient and energy requirements and metabolism, assessment and treatment of disease-induced malnutrition, nutritional support methods applied to case management. Emphasizes assessment of anthropometric and biochemical indicators, clinical symptoms, and development of individual nutritional care plans. For advanced undergraduates students requiring preparation for clinical course.
This course introduces students to basic concepts of the clinical experience, including diagnostic principles and procedures in CSD. The course builds on working knowledge of information related to a variety of communication disorders and focuses on diagnostic assessment, clinical writing, and clinical materials and equipment. The clinical experience is introduced through weekly seminars, simulated cases, videos, etc. Clinical practicum experiences are supervised by ASHA-certified and state-licensed professionals.
This course advances clinical training in standardized and non-standardized assessment, dynamic assessment, treatment management plan development, and clinical writing skills across the lifespan with cultural and linguistic responsive practices. These skills are embedded through clinical decision-making, simulations, and experiences that promote clinical training.
This course further synthesizes non-standardized and dynamic assessment, intervention planning, and clinical writing while providing speech and language services across the lifespan. Students assume case management, professional practices and further diagnostic skills, treatment management, and goal writing through experiential learning. Clinical decision-making skills are enhanced in an interactive weekly class setting. The clinical education relationship is mentored in supervisory conferences.
Analysis of the etiology, pathology, and clinical sciences of cardiac, circulatory and pulmonary diseases, disorders, and disabilities. Imaging techniques and clinical/ laboratory assessment techniques and pharmacological interventions will be presented.
This forum embeds students within the broad landscape of the field of applied psychology, as they engage with critical and timely work in the areas of theory, research, practice, consultation, and advocacy. Presentations from renowned experts, faculty, and students explore substantive, methodological, and professional issues in clinical, counseling, and applied psychology.
Through readings, case studies, & observation students will examine specific cognitive abilities that are crucial for everyday activities. Students will study brain functions in normal & brain-damaged populations & will learn about different cognitive rehabilitation approaches from a multidisciplinary perspective. Students will also learn about theoretical approaches designed to address cognitive & perceptual impairments such as attention, orientation, executive functions & more. Emphasis will be on cognitive problem identification: the evaluation process, & presentation of different treatment approaches in rehabilitation science. Course is appropriate for students interested in pre-health, nursing, speech pathology, education, psychology, linguistics, & neuroscience.
