In this doctoral seminar, students will develop an understanding of the ways in which they may inquire about policy issues relevant in their academic and professional lives. By exploring in depth a substantial body of knowledge drawn from selected cases and current theoretical issues, students will study the development of policy, the instruments used to effect policy, and some analyses of implementation.

Exploration of educational reform and leadership in the context of fundamental economic, cultural and technological changes that have occurred globally particularly in the last 30 years. Study of its impact on the policy, organizational, and classroom levels, as well as implications for the concept of an “educated person,” private and public social spheres, racialized and gendered identities, and youth culture. Classical liberal and neo-liberal economic and political issues will be explored along with their impact on educational institutions.

Educational technologies have become essential for international exchange as a "leapfrog" technology for development, as a way of bridging distance in education, and as an important means for the preservation and dissemination of local cultures and contexts. Educational technology is a significant and growing force worldwide, and not only in industrialized nations. E-learning, open educational resources, m-learning, and educational media are transforming not only formal primary, secondary, and postsecondary education, but also rural economic development, agriculture, and women's empowerment. In this course, we look at how educational communications and technology shape, and are shaped by, their context internationally.

The course provides an in-depth examination of the affordances & limitations of educational technology in enhancing the teaching & learning of secondary school mathematics. It focuses on the use of handheld & computer technology, & introduces web-based mathematical software, dynamic software, graphical tools & other software that can be successfully incorporated in the middle & high school mathematics classroom. The course offers opportunities to engage in, design, & critique technology-enhanced mathematical activities that aim at developing understanding of school mathematics.

This course provides a link between teachers' mathematical knowledge & understanding of college level mathematics & the use of handheld & computer instructional technology to effectively & appropriate teach many of the important skills & concepts of mathematics in grades 7 through 12.

This course focuses on electronic music synthesizer techniques. Concepts in the synthesis of music, including generation of sound, voltage control, and treatment of sound and tape techniques. Included is a short synopsis of the history and literature of analog electronic music. Students complete laboratory tasks and compositions on vintage synthesizer modules and create one or more final projects that demonstrate(s) the application of these concepts.

This course is designed to introduce the student to contemporary practices of creating and presenting electroacoustic music from the practical perspectives of analyzing works and understanding current technologies and aesthetic paradigms. In addition to musicological issues, composition will be placed in the wider context of contemporary art and New Media practices. This is a composition class that uses a music appreciation format to teach music creation today.Practical compositional lectures by Michal Rataj will focus on the analysis of a few key works, each dealing with specific aspects of music and technology and individual compositional approaches. Eric Rosenzveig will present theoretical classes providing an overview, background and competing theories from the varied perspectives of the artist, philosopher, technologist, musician and composer. We will try and look at the question “why” in addition to “how” to make a new work. We'll listen to many shorter works in class, to provide context to our discussions.

Student projects may be analog, digital, or a hybrid, and should be unique in some way from devices currently in the commercial marketplace. Students present their designs and functioning physical prototypes with the class as they evolve throughout the semester for feedback.

Application of electrotherapeutic modalities, including alternating, direct, and pulsed current (e.g. high voltage galvanic stimulation, interferential current), neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), functional electrical stimulation (FES) for improving posture for movement, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), iontophoresis, electrical muscle stimulation, and biofeedback in order to: modulate or decrease pain; reduce or eliminate soft tissue inflammation caused by musculoskeltelal, neuromuscular, peripheral vascular, or integumentary injury, disease, developmental delay, or surgery; maintain strength after injury or surgery; decrease unwanted muscular activity; assist muscle contraction in gait or other functional training; or increase the rate of healing of open wounds.

This course is designed to introduce occupational therapy students to the concept of leadership in complex and emerging practice environments. The course integrates leadership theory with practice through topical readings, reflection, discussion, and guest presentations. Students will develop a personal leadership philosophy to help guide their future leadership roles.

A survey of post-industrial business models and regional/global markets that will under gird the production and distribution of music and music-related cultural goods and services in the first decades of the 21st century. The course lays out the major theoretical, historical, technological, and socioeconomic threads linking popular music and networked communications systems and media. Occupational therapists have always and will continue to respond to the emerging needs of society. This course examines how changes in society and health care influence and expand the provision of occupational therapy services in nontraditional settings- explores the history of emerging practice in the profession and teaches students how to develop theoretically based programs or services for emerging practice opportunities.

Focuses on the way that emotion develops over the course of a lifespan in relation to cognition. Topics include the organization model of emotional development; the neural basis of emotion and cognition; the relation of emotional and cognitive development to temperament and personality.

This course will focus on the lyrical pronunciation rules for American and British English. Students will be required to demonstrate mastery of these rules through transliteration of song texts into the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and in performance of assigned repertoire.

Focus is on theoretical and practice-based understandings of admissions and retention programming in U.S. colleges. Links between practice and the theory and research relating to college choice, access, and retention will be explored. Variations by student population and institutional type will be presented and implications for programming will be considered.
