Multilingual Learners in Early Childhood

This course explores theories, research, teaching methods, and policies related to the education of multilingual learners in early childhood education. Key topics explored include (1) Models and programs of bilingual and ENL (English as a New Language) education, and their evaluation in the literature; (2) teaching methods and strategies for multilingual learners in diverse classroom contexts (3) cultural, social, and political perspectives on language minority education and family/community engagement. Emphasis is on pedagogical implications of the above.

Music Composition Undergraduate Capstone

In this course, students present their compositional work in a public performance. Students receive guidance and resources for the presentation of a marathon style concert featuring work by all Juniors in the composition program. Students will work with the instructor to coordinate and develop all aspects of the concert experience including production, marketing, and programming. The class will be a combination of group and individual meetings culminating in a marathon concert at the end of the semester.

Music Hist IV: Twentieth

The course provides an overview of the major trends in classical music of the last 100 years in the West. Special attention will be paid to the musical culture of Central Europe and particularly the Czech lands. Central compositional and aesthetic issues of 20th century music will be discussed on the basis of source texts as well as academic writings. Music, politics and nationalism, atonality and serialism, experimental and electronic music, the musical minimalism, and other topics will be covered.

Students will study the music of Cuba from African, Iberian, and Pan-American roots, and learn to analyze and understand its musical and historical significance. Course addresses technological, social, and economic developments in Cuba, the Caribbean, and the US in the context of their influence on the evolution of Cuban music. Students will study the development of Afro-Cuban music as a musical style and learn to identify harmonic, rhythmic, melodic and textural elements. Students will gain a heightened awareness of music, culture and race relations associated with this genre. The commonalities and differences between Afro-Cuban music and jazz will be explained and discussed.
