Capstone III

Capstone III: Doctoral Capstone Project Proposal

Course focuses on the development of the OTD capstone project proposal. Emphasis is placed on understanding and defining the relationship between elements in a scholarly proposal including the problem statement supported by the needs assessment, literature review, methodology, and knowledge translation (KT)
sections. Students will develop culturally and contextually appropriate KT products, based on the needs of multiple stakeholders to disseminate knowledge gained from their Capstone project and facilitate uptake of their work.

Capstone IV: Doctoral Capstone Project

The focus of the course is to guide students’ implementation and completion of their doctoral capstone project while on the Doctoral Capstone Experience (DCE). The doctoral capstone coordinator (DCC) will deliver lectures, and serve as a resource and consultant to students, faculty and capstone mentors. The faculty mentor serves as a resource and consultant to the student on the doctoral capstone proposal that was developed in previous courses. Students will complete a final capstone report and disseminate outcomes of their capstone project at the end of the course.

Capstone Thesis

The two-semester capstone thesis experience gives students the opportunity to apply theories, methods, and design principles learned throughout the program to a real-world or scholarly inquiry of their choosing. The thesis demonstrates the student’s ability to conduct independent research or design-based inquiry. Students design and propose a project in the first semester and execute and defend their capstone thesis in the second semester.

Capstone:Applied Rsch in Education Policy

Students will participate in practical training to design and perform a research study developed with a concern for data availability, importance of problem, and ability to ascertain causal relationships. Projects will be designed and written for a particular 'clientele' in the policy community. Emphasis will be placed on the appropriate use of the data set, the methodology, and documenting the research in a written form that will be understood by and useful for the intended audience. The development of effective and efficient teams that utilize and build upon the experience, skills and interests of team members is an integral part of the Education and Social Policy curriculum.

Case Studies in Fashion History: Prehistory to 1800

Traces the evolution of dress from early body practices to the rise of consumer culture during the 18th century through topics including clothing as signifier of status and morality; the mechanics of the clothing trades and the impact of technology; trends and personalities; the politicization of dress during the French Revolution. The class considers the materiality of clothing and accessories and the relationship between dress and the body. Through lectures, discussions, and projects students are encouraged to seek their individual concentration in the field.

Case Study/Ethnographic Inquiry

Conceptual and methodological activities build on and extend those begun during the previous semester in E10.2140. Strengthening fieldwork skills. Second half of the fieldwork project to be completed with an emphasis placed on emergent, complex data analyses. Various ways of writing up results for presentation in dissertations and other publishable forms are examined. Guidelines for qualitative, field-based dissertation proposals are reviewed.

Causal Inference

Course provides students with a basic knowledge of both how to perform analyses and critique the use of some more advanced statistical methods useful in answering policy questions. While randomized experiments will be discussed, the primary focus will be the challenge of answering causal questions using data that do not meet such standards. Several approaches for observational data including propensity score methods, instrumental variables, difference in differences, fixed effects models and regression discontinuity designs will be discussed. Examples from real public policy studies will be used to illustrate key ideas and methods.
