Research Centers and Institutes

The Center for Research on Higher Education Outcomes (CRHEO) conducts research on the effects of college on students.  Home to professional research staff, faculty partners, affiliates, and graduate students, CRHEO's projects lead to a better understanding of the ways students develop during college and the conditions that contribute to their success.

The Consortium for Research and Evaluation of Advanced Technologies in Education (CREATE) engages in research on the design, critique, and evaluation of wide-ranging advanced digital technologies for learning. Projects housed in the consortium involve interdisciplinary teams of scholars and developers who bridge basic and applied research, development, and evaluation.

Games for Learning Institute, a collaboration between seven partner universities with support from Microsoft Research, is dedicated to advancing the design, use, and evaluation of computer games in formal and informal educational settings.

Lab for Design Of Learning, Collaboration, & Experience is modeled on the concept of a knowledge building community, a learning- and knowledge-focused community of practice. Knowledge-building communities work best when participants have high levels of agency and the dolcelab deliberately tries to maintain individual agency and legitimate peripheral participation within the context of a shared research lab.

The Steinhardt Institute for Higher Education Policy seeks to define and assess the critical challenges facing colleges and universities in the present era. The Institute incorporates an international perspective in its work and supports research and dialogue that enhance our understanding of higher education as an institution that both reflects and influences social, cultural, racial and economic difference.
