Maurice Childs is an Adjunct Faculty member in the Teaching and Learning Department and an educator specializing in language instruction and multilingual education. He earned a Master of Arts in Teaching in TESOL and Spanish as a Foreign Language from New York University (2015). Prior to this, he completed both a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts in International Business and Spanish for International Trade at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (2007).
Building on his academic foundation, Maurice was selected in July 2023 as a recipient of the Astor International Travel Fellowship for New York City Teachers. Through this fellowship, he traveled to Tel Aviv, Israel, with other New York City Public School teachers, where they explored School-EdTech partnerships in “Startup Nation.”
Most recently, in 2024, he further advanced his leadership expertise by completing his Educational Leadership Certification at Bank Street College of Education through the New Leaders National Aspiring Principals Fellowship.
Maurice brings international and diverse classroom experience to his teaching. He lived and worked in Spain for two years as an English Language Assistant (Auxiliar de Conversación), where he taught English in the Spanish public school system at the Educación Primaria (6-12 years old), Educación Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO) (12-16 years old), and Bachillerato (16-18 years old) levels. He also spent one year in Madrid working with Training Express, delivering English-language instruction to professionals at a range of companies and organizations.
Additionally, Maurice has led high school summer study abroad programs to Spain, Peru, and Mexico as a Program Leader with the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE).
Currently, Maurice is in his 11th year with New York City Public Schools, where he works with elementary and middle school students as an English as a New Language and Spanish teacher. His professional interests include bilingual education, language acquisition, and culturally responsive teaching practices.
At NYU, Maurice teaches the course "Second Language Classroom: Elementary and Secondary Schools".
