The Steinhardt Office of Global Affairs offers competitive, need-based scholarships to support participation in Steinhardt January, Spring Break, and Summer short-term study abroad programs. Scholarship awards range from $500 to $1500 and are applied as a credit to the student's Bursar bill for the term in which study abroad takes place.
Eligibility
Students are eligible to apply so long as they:
- Are currently completing a Steinhardt graduate or undergraduate degree program
- Have submitted an application to participate in a short-term, travel-based Steinhardt Global course
- Display financial need through the scholarship application documents (see the "Required Application Components" section below for more information)
- Both U.S. citizens and international students are eligible to apply
Students are not eligible to receive this scholarship if they:
- Are an NYU student at a School other than Steinhardt, a visiting student, or a student graduating before participating in their study abroad course
- Have previously received a Steinhardt Global Need-Based Scholarship award
- Are enrolling as a non-credit participant
- Receive tuition remission from NYU (this includes employees, spouses, and dependents)
- Received, during the current academic year, a fully funded fellowship or scholarship from NYU (including Steinhardt Fellows, Founders Fellows, and Research Assistants)
How To Apply
- First, submit the study abroad program application
- Log in to your application status portal and click on the "Global Affairs Study Abroad" application link at the bottom of the page
- Click on the "Need-Based Scholarship Application" tab, then the "Apply Now" button
Required Application Components
Documents must be in PDF or DOC format and must be in English. If original documents are in a language other than English, provide an English translation along with the original.
- Financial Need Statement: Approximately 250 words describing your current financial circumstances and explaining the gap between your financial resources and the cost of studying abroad. Information about the expenses you are managing, the way you are funding your academic studies, and any personal circumstances that impact your financial situation
- Financial documentation:
- All applicants must submit a copy of their NYU Bursar Bill showing their billing and payment history for the duration of their time at Steinhardt. Download this from Albert
- In addition:
- US citizens must submit a copy of their FAFSA Submission Summary
- International students must submit financial documentation demonstrating their financial need. This may include documentation of loans or other sources of funding being used to finance their education, documentation of expenses and/or income, or any other documentation that shows financial need
- Documents must be from official sources, such as banks and loan providers. Personal attestations are not accepted
- Applicants may redact sensitive information (for example, Social Security numbers, bank/credit account numbers, etc.) before submitting
- Applicants should contextualize their financial documentation in their Financial Need Statement
Scholarship Application Deadlines
Interested students are strongly encouraged to complete the Global Need-Based Scholarship application concurrently with their study abroad program application. Students who submit both applications together will receive priority consideration for scholarships.
Need-based scholarship applications must be submitted by:
- For January programs: November 15
- For Spring programs: December 15
- For Summer programs: April 15
Late applications will not be accepted.
