Turkey: Global Perspectives in Higher Education

Graduate Study Abroad

The Republic of Turkey is a modern nation created in 1923 amid the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. It is located at the nexus of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, and is a powerful presence in the global economic and political culture. The last 100 years have seen a unique and evolving blend of secular advances and Islamic traditions. Our global course explores Turkey's robust higher education system, which we explore through visits to the three major centers of historical and cultural interest, which are also the major centers for universities and colleges. We will begin in Istanbul (formerly Constantinople) and then travel to Ankara and Izmir, where we will also spend a day visiting the World Heritage site of Ephesus and other sites of antiquity. Meeting with policy scholars, university leaders, students, and faculty, we will explore issues of curriculum, relationship to labor markets, student socio-economic status, and issues of diversity and equity.
