This interdisciplinary, cross-school global field intensive course focuses on the climate crisis through the lens of public policy, global health, education, and questions of Intersectionality. The course consists of five online modules prior to travel, addressing ethics, protocols, and practices of international research and humanitarian assistance, followed by a ten-day field research project in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Guiding questions include: What are the strengths and weaknesses of existing institutional frameworks and policies in addressing and tackling climate change and related social sector crises? How are the climate crisis and related public sectors, like health and education, being increasingly securitized and impacted by austerity measures? How do matters of intersectionality affect policy questions, research, and implementation?
While in Zanzibar, students will work in multidisciplinary teams of global health, public policy, and education students, along with local and regional UNICEF practitioners. These research teams will address issues around the climate crisis, health, and community-based education and training.
This three-credit course will integrate research and studies from education, public health, and other disciplines to inform emergency and humanitarian action. Students will gain a foundation of knowledge and skills to design and implement strategies in prevention and community-based education in response to climate change, disease outbreaks, and other humanitarian crises.

Out-of-Pocket Costs
Students are responsible for purchasing flights to and from the program location and will be notified when to book. We recommend comparing tickets on multiple sites to ensure the best fare.
In addition to airfare, participants should budget for other out-of-pocket costs, including daily meals (except for included welcome and farewell meals); transportation to and from the airport; passport and/or visa fees (if applicable); vaccination costs (if applicable); and other personal incidentals. These costs will vary depending on individual students' budgets, preferences, and choices. Participants are encouraged to use the Study Abroad Budget Worksheet linked below to estimate these expenses.
In addition, all visitors to Zanzibar are required to have approved travel insurance to enter the island. Only the official Zanzibar Travel Insurance, authorized by the Tanzanian government, is accepted—international policies are not valid. The cost of the insurance is $44 per person and can be purchased in advance of arrival or upon arrival.
Scholarships
NYU Steinhardt offers two short-term study abroad scholarships and maintains a list of additional external funding opportunities.
Study Abroad Budget Worksheet
The Study Abroad Budget Worksheet was created to help participants estimate the cost of their study abroad experience and identify any funding gaps. We encourage all students to complete the Worksheet to estimate their expected costs and funding sources. Contact the Steinhardt Office of Global Affairs with any questions.
PLEASE NOTE: This spreadsheet lists possible expenses and may not be all-inclusive of program costs. In addition, costs may fluctuate due to changes in currency exchange rates, airfare, personal preferences, and other factors. While this is a good tool for reviewing study abroad expenses, the results should be considered estimates.
