Summer Institute of Music Production Technology (SIMPT)

The Summer Institute of Music Production Technology (pronounced "SIMP-T") is designed for rising high school juniors and seniors who play a musical instrument or sing. The 2021 sessions will be conducted remotely in light of COVID-19. Students will have access to exclusive instruction materials and explore the increasingly relevant world of remote collaboration and music creation. Students in this program will focus on all of the aspects of contemporary music production. While exploring both the technical and artistic processes inherent to creating music, students will work with faculty and guests to create original music collaboratively in a remote capacity.  To broaden the scope of young producers, several supplemental topics will also be discussed, such as sound effects editing, experimental music and the latest research in music technology.

Daily activities will consist of webinars in large and sub-group sizes with our faculty.  Webinars will be a blend of lecture and interactive instruction. Faculty will guide students remotely through collaborative labs allowing all students to contribute to a variety of group projects. Current methods of remote connectivity and music production will be discussed and implemented. Over the course of the program, students will collaborate in sub-groups to create original works with an emphasis on performance and live. These projects will be refined progressively during the program with faculty and peer review and will culminate in a professionally produced musical work.

Audition Requirements

Recommendation letter (required): Recommenders should be chosen from people most familiar with your former or current studies, musical interests, or work. Friends, family members, or guardians should not write the letters of recommendation. Examples of people who should write letter of recommendation include teachers of music and/or music technology related subjects, guidance counselors, work, or internship supervisors.

The required recommendation letters are to be submitted within your application directly (instruction are provided in regards to having the recommender uploading it themselves). Optional but highly recommended: Please submit one audition video of the applicant playing a musical instrument or singing from sheet music or audio recording showing your instrument/voice recording and mixing skills.
