9 – is therapeutic theatre created by Lotus Collective. Nine interconnected stories address the experience of trauma. The Collective considers creation a transformative tool to locate pathways through what was, into what is possible. Lotus Collective uses the power of words and the reclamation of movement to pass through the center of trauma towards post-traumatic growth. 9 – is the result of a community partnership between NYU Program in Drama Therapy, Sanctuary for Families and Big Dance Theatre.
Lotus Collective was born in the muck of 2020. These artists crafted an impossibly blooming show in the midst of a pandemic, a surge of white supremacy, record-breaking economic depression, isolation from people, resources, and the stage itself. Each piece is a petal of renewal and the strength to stand up and say “I’m still here.” Synergy and uplifting each other in isolation and ongoing trauma is no easy task, but the Lotus Collective was up for it and thoughtfully dedicated to each other and this project. They have been incredibly giving of themselves, and have adapted to more changes than can be named. The performers have taken on not only creating their pieces, but learning how to shoot their own footage. We hope you will feel the love, bravery, and community that we have been honored to witness.
The group and the audiences will dialogue in a series of post-performance conversations about the many issues that people face in living with various forms of violence (gender-based, racialized, and xenophobic) structurally and interpersonally. Through this dialogue, we hope to increase community awareness and contribute to social action and change.
Join us for an opportunity to meet with Lotus Collective after each performance using the Zoom link provided when you registered.
