The Dean’s Alumni Advisory Board Member co-founded SW London Women to help build supportive communities by and for women.

SW London Women was recently named a finalist for Social Enterprise StartUp of the Year in the UK StartUp Awards 2025 for the London region. The company—a platform for building a supportive, women-led community—was co-founded by Shoba Gayathri Nahappan (MA ’06, Visual Arts Administration), a member of the NYU Steinhardt Dean’s Alumni Advisory Board since its inception in 2022.

“SW London Women was born out of the challenges I faced as a single mom and my search for community,” says Nahappan. “Grateful for those who shaped me and stood by me on life’s journey, I created this initiative to thank them and to pay it forward by supporting others.”

SW London Women hosts engaging, women-led events that are designed to empower women from all backgrounds through insightful discussions, inspiring storytelling, and valuable networking opportunities. Events often feature guest speakers on topics including entrepreneurship, mental health, sustainability, positive intelligence, and more; they also do advocacy work, raising money for charities and causes that benefit the community at large, such as youth mental health.

“What started off as community-building in my own backyard has become a movement all across London and beyond,” says Nahappan. “Through this platform, we have given women opportunities to get back to work, allowed for connections between professionals and younger women that result in internships, and created a safe space where women can be open and vulnerable and inspire each other.”

In January, SW London Women also supported and organized “Can Art Save Lives?” at NYU London, an inspiring event that celebrated the profound connection between creativity and well-being. Both Steinhardt and the Jameel Arts & Health Lab also supported the event.

“It’s been especially gratifying to combine my work with SW London Women and NYU Steinhardt to create real impact across sectors,” says Nahappan, who attended the UK StartUp Awards regional finals event in London in June with co-founder Francesca Odedra. “It’s rewarding to see that we’re doing something meaningful.”

“On behalf of the entire community, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Shoba and SW London Women on your incredible achievement,” says Jack H. Knott, Gale and Ira Drukier Dean at NYU Steinhardt. “Your dedication to building spaces that empower and connect women is both inspiring and impactful. We look forward to seeing how your vision continues to shape and strengthen communities near and far.”

Many members of the Steinhardt community have participated in SW London Women’s events, including Nicole R. Fleetwood, James Weldon Johnson Professor of Media, Culture, and Communication, and Cherrie Short, CBE, Senior Fellow of Global and Community Strategy at the NYU Silver School of Social Work and Dean Knott's wife.

Other finalists in the UK StartUp Awards London 2025 Social Enterprise category included an AI-augmented talk therapy platform, an organization committed to bridging the digital divide for neurodivergent communities, and a nonprofit that advocates for plant medicine and holistic healthcare.
