Dongyang Fei—a first-year doctoral student in Musical Theater Performance with a sub-specialization in Performing Arts Administration at NYU Steinhardt and a member of the NYU Alumni Shanghai Committee—delivered the final performance at the 2025 NYU Alumni Pan-Asia Conference in Shenzhen, China in early November. Themed “Dialogue of the Bays: When Shenzhen Meets New York,” the conference emphasized the importance of global exchange and alumni collaboration.
Fei was introduced on stage by Hope O'Reilly, Senior Vice President of NYU, who highlighted his academic journey: a bachelor’s degree from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, followed by a dual master’s degree in Musical Theater Performance and Vocal Pedagogy from NYU Steinhardt. Currently pursuing a doctorate in the same field with a focus in Performing Arts Administration, Fei has previously taught in both NYU Steinhardt’s Vocal Performance program and NYU Shanghai’s music curriculum. His performance blended technical precision with emotional depth, resonating with the conference’s theme of global connection and earning warm applause from attendees—including NYU Trustee Andre J.L. Koo and NYU Shanghai Vice Chancellor Jeffrey S. Lehman.
Following the performance, Fei conversed with NYU leaders such as Hope O'Reilly and Bharat N. Anand, Dean of the Stern School of Business. He shared reflections on his doctoral studies at Steinhardt and his practical involvement in alumni engagement as a member of the NYU Alumni Shanghai Committee.
Looking ahead, Fei aims to leverage Steinhardt's strengths in musical theater and arts administration by organizing workshops and collaborative projects with alumni across the Pan-Asia region and beyond. Through these efforts, he hopes to foster cross-cultural opportunities for current students while expanding Steinhardt’s global influence and recognition. "Performing as the finale at the 2025 NYU Pan-Asia Conference was a profound blend of art, community, and global connection—reminding me of the power of music to bridge cultures and amplify Steinhardt’s legacy worldwide," he said.
