Several members of our community are among the nominees for the 2022 Grammy Awards. String Studies Artist Faculty Brandee Younger was nominated in the Best Instrumental Composition category for "Beautiful Is Black." The track appears on the harpist’s album Somewhere Different, produced by Jazz Studies Artist Faculty Dezron Douglas. Music Composition Artist Faculty Caroline Shaw received a Best Contemporary Classical Composition nomination for Narrow Sea. The performers on the nominated recording of the piece include Percussion Artist Faculty Josh Quillen as a member of Sō Percussion. Music Technology alum (MM ’17) and adjunct Mike Tierney is nominated as the producer of Cerrone: The Arching Path in the Best Classical Compendium category.
Three nominees are alumni of our Summer Screen Scoring workshops: Kris Bowers, nominated in the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media category for Bridgerton; Tom Nazziola, nominated in the Best Instrumental Composition category for "Cat And Mouse"; and Emily Bear, nominated in the Best Musical Theater Album category for The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical. In addition, Superblue, an album by Kurt Elling and Charlie Hunter, received a nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album. The record features “Can’t Make It With Your Brain,” a song co-written by Elling, Hunter, two members of the band Butcher Brown, and Director of Songwriting Phil Galdston. It is the 18th GRAMMY-nominated or winning record on which Galdston’s work appears.
