You are required to upload a copy of your most recent résumé or curriculum vitae as part of your application.

Statement of Purpose - Short Answer Questions

In the Statement of Purpose section of the online application please provide your short-answers to the following (four) questions:

1) What is one life experience that has shaped your interest in and approach to the study of human development? Explain in no more than 250 words. Do not just describe the experience; discuss how it has shaped why and how you want to pursue a career in this field.

2) How have your prior education and work experience prepared you to pursue an MA in Human Development Research and Policy? Explain in no more than 250 words. Do not just list your most relevant credentials; discuss how the two or three most relevant experiences have influenced your interests and provided you with the requisite skills to succeed.

3) Why did you choose NYU-Steinhardt’s MA in Human Development Research and Policy? Explain in no more than 250 words. Do not just express your interest in the field; identify the aspects of this program that most appealed to you as specifically as possible.

4) What do you plan to do after you graduate from the MA program in Human Development Research and Policy? Explain in no more than 250 words. Tell us about the kind of jobs or work that you would like to do and the types of organizations where you would like to be based. If you have an interest in pursuing graduate school further (e.g., PhD programs), specify the field in which you are interested and discuss why. If you are pursuing the MA to explore different options, discuss the options you are considering and what you find appealing in each of them.

Letters of Recommendation

Submit two letters of recommendation. Be sure to request them well in advance of the deadline. Read detailed instructions on submitting letters of recommendation.

Writing Sample

Required. As part of your application, you are required to submit a writing sample (e.g., research article, policy report, undergraduate or graduate paper, op-ed, or blog post). It should demonstrate your writing and analytic skills. The sample should be no more than 20 pages and it does not need to display knowledge of psychology or human development and social intervention.

Transcripts

Upload one official copy of transcripts from every postsecondary institution (college/university) you have attended or are attending. Please note: This includes transcripts from institutions where you received transfer credits or did not complete a degree.  Make sure to request an official copy of the transcript(s) in advance of the deadline.

Transfer Credits

We understand accepted transfer credits may be clearly listed on your degree awarding institution’s transcript. The Office of Graduate Admissions still requires a transcript from the initial credit-granting institution where you took the course(s). Delay in listing and uploading these transcripts can significantly delay the application review process.

Institutions Outside the US or Canada

If you completed or are completing a degree at an institution outside of the US or Canada, you are required to provide a WES or ECE international credentials evaluation. Please review our requirements for translation and a course-by-course evaluation of your transcripts.

See detailed instructions on submitting transcripts.

GRE

Optional. The Admissions Committee acknowledges there are several ways to demonstrate graduate school readiness. This may include, but not limited to, professional or academic experience or by submitting the test results from the GRE. Therefore, the GRE is optional for applicants to Human Development Research and Policy.
