Compressed Workweek Schedules and Hybrid/Remote Work

Overview

NYU believes that a robust in-person presence is how to best support our teaching, research, and student support missions. However, even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, NYU recognized the need to provide flexibility for work that could be effectively performed remotely and instituted the Hybrid/Remote Work Policy (formerly, the NYU Telecommuting Policy).

While the Hybrid/Remote Work Policy governs where your work can be performed, NYU Steinhardt also offers a Compressed Workweek during Summer months, which allows you greater flexibility in when your work can be performed.

Regular Business Hours

Regular business hours are generally 9 AM to 5 PM. With a one hour lunch break, this works out to 35 hours per week. Hours can vary by unit based on operational needs, but in general the students, faculty, staff, researchers, and other visitors we serve should be able to find us at our normal work locations during regular business hours.

Compressed Workweek

A Compressed Workweek allows an employee to satisfy the 35 hour per week requirement in fewer days resulting in an extra day off every week (or every two weeks) without impacting time-off balances. For example, an employee working 8.75 hours Monday through Thursday can have Friday off (8.75 x 4 = 35).

Compressed Workweeks do not impact where work is performed, only when it is performed.

Example of compressed workweek schedule (4 days x 8.75 hours per day = 35 hours per week):

Compressed Workweeks require unit head and Steinhardt HR approval and are only permitted during off-peak periods (generally summer). Even during non-peak periods, compressed workweek requests may be denied if on-site coverage is required during regular business hours or if there is simply no work to do outside of regular business hours.

Hybrid/Remote Work

As of August 1, 2022, if your job is eligible for Hybrid/Remote Work, you may be able to regularly work one or more full days from home or some other remote location. You would still be expected to work the same general hours and perform your job responsibilities just as you would at a University work site. Not all employees are eligible; please review the Hybrid/Remote Work Policy for full details.

Hybrid/Remote Work does not impact when work is performed, only where it is performed. Hybrid/Remote Work performed outside the New York metro area (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania) will still require additional University approval.
