“If everyone mentored someone, then we would all move forward,” said Dr. George Castle, a clinical assistant professor in the NYU Steinhardt Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders.
Dr. Castle recently joined the ASHA Voices podcast to discuss the importance of mentorship in the field of speech-language pathology through the lens of his experience as a Black male SLP. In the episode, Dr. Castle speaks to the personal influence of one of his own mentors, the late Dr. Kenyatta Rivers, and acknowledges that though anyone can be a role model, there is a necessity for aspiring SLPs to see successful people who literally look like themselves.
“[Dr. Rivers] let me know I wasn’t alone and showed me how to be successful both academically and professionally,” Dr. Castle told ASHA Voices.
Listen to the episode to hear Dr. Castle talk about his career path and how SLPs can help spread awareness of the profession to more students of color.
