The Communicative Sciences and Disorders Summer Study Abroad Program in Sweden offers master's-level students in Communicative Sciences and Disorders an opportunity to earn graduate credits while living and studying in Lund, Sweden. Sweden is a country known for its state-of-the-art approaches to speech science and speech-language pathology. Housed in the Department of Clinical Sciences in the Medical School of Lund University in Sweden, in the unit for Logopedics and Phoniatrics, the program combines lectures with directed enrichment activities. The program includes visits to research labs, international schools, and companies focusing on the development of new technologies such as eye-tracking.

The program also benefits from available expertise of Lund University researchers, and physicians, who are faculty members. Course content is discussed from a cross-cultural perspective. Students are exposed to current research projects in an international environment that supports both basic as well as applied research. In addition, students travel together to historic sites in Sweden and participate in local traditional celebrations like Midsummer’s Eve.

All participants must participate in classes and required field trips to institutes, hospitals, and/or rehabilitation centers. The program runs for 2-3 weeks, with classes occurring on weekdays leaving most weekends free for trips and enrichment activities.

Information about the Lund, Sweden Study Abroad Program will be updated and shared by the NYU Steinhardt Office of Global Affairs and Experiential Learning as details are finalized.

Student Testimonials

As an online student, I jumped at the opportunity to study abroad in Sweden. I wanted to make connections with professors and fellow students in the NYU community and because of the small cohort of students, we were able to bond immediately. The program provided the perfect mix of rigorous, academic content and cultural excursions. I couldn’t recommend this program more!

Lexci Reveley (MS '21)

There are few speech-language pathology graduate programs that offer a study abroad experience embedded in the curriculum. Studying and living within a culture different from my own helped me (and continues to help me) become a more open-minded, flexible, and personable clinician. My favorite parts about studying abroad in Sweden were attending presentations by leading researchers in our field, meeting fellow speech-language pathology graduate students at Lund University, and enjoying Sweden's beauty. It was truly one of the greatest experiences I had during my time at NYU.

Claudette Bañares (MS '15)

This trip was so important to me because I now have a stronger connection with my peers, professors, and profession. We stepped out of our comfort zones and learned from each other, as well as from those we interacted with abroad. For example, we were lucky enough to hear from a variety of researchers regarding recent findings and differences in global treatment techniques and speak with local students about the structure of their programs and the profession in their country. I left with a better idea of the direction in which I want to focus my career.
