Center for Public Research and Leadership (CPRL)

EDSP Capstone Alternative

About CPRL

As an alternative to the traditional Capstone-Practicum course, you may apply to participate in the Center for Public Research and Leadership (CPRL). This option can be utilized to complete your capstone program requirement.

CPRL is a center at Columbia Law School that prepares graduate students for careers in government, advocacy, and public interest groups, law firms, and consulting firms. CPRL does this by offering a semester-long, immersive course that combines a research and consulting project, an academic seminar on structural change in public education, professional skills development, and career and networking support.

CPRL research and consulting projects serve school districts, state education departments, non-profit organizations, advocacy organizations, and foundations driving transformational change in public education and improved outcomes for all children—particularly those of color, from low-income households, or otherwise traditionally underserved.

Eligibility & Participation Policy:

  • Must be a full-time student in the Education & Social Policy Program.
  • Must be in good academic standing and completing the program requirements in the intended sequence.

Additional Policy Regarding CPRL: This alternative to the Capstone-Practicum course is not guaranteed. Students must meet the eligibility requirements above and follow the steps necessary to apply. While all eligible EDSP students are welcome to apply, only one student from the program will be selected. After you receive an offer letter, you must get approval from the EDSP Program Director(s) and program advisor.

How to Apply:

Students should discuss interest in participating in CPRL with their advisor prior to submitting an application during the spring semester. To participate in the CPRL opportunity, you must apply, interview, and receive an official offer from the CPRL Hiring Team. Participation in CPRL can only be during the Fall term when you are scheduled to participate in the Capstone.

An Information Session specifically for EDSP Students will be hosted with representatives from the CPRL Team during the Spring Semester. After the information session, the application form and interview will be coordinated.

Expectations and Enrollment Details:

CPRL is considered a full-time (30+ hrs/week) internship commitment that requires you to be in-person at the Center Monday through Friday (specific hours are determined by supervisor). Participation in CPRL means that you are allocating your required capstone credits (4) and a portion of your total elective credits towards this opportunity.

The CPRL opportunity can be completed for 9 to 12 credits. The courses below are designated CPRL sections. These course sections do not meet regularly.

  • Capstone: EDPLY-GE 2050 - 4 credits [will fulfill Capstone Requirement]
  • Internship: EDPLY-GE 2055 - 3 credits [will count towards elective credit]
  • Independent Study: EDPLY-GE 2300 - 2-5 credits [will count towards elective credit]

The EDSP Capstone Course, EDPLY-GE 2050, is only offered during the Fall term.
