Studying away brings your NYU Steinhardt education into a new global context, giving you the opportunity to experience your field from a different perspective, build connections across cultures, and make the world part of your classroom.
Your program’s Global Pathway shows you when and where study away fits best within your degree, with recommended courses to keep you on track toward graduation. You may also explore other NYU global locations, provided your study away plans align with your degree requirements and academic progress.
Explore your pathway below, review Steinhardt's Core Equivalencies for global course offerings, and connect with your academic advisor to start planning your global experience.
Required Global Component
The required global component of the major will most often take the form of a semester away. Typically, our BA students study away during their sophomore or junior years. Review the sample plan of study to learn about what classes you might take during your semester away.
Students who are unable to study away for a semester may complete the requirement through one of several options, by advisement. Advanced undergraduate students have the opportunity to join one of Steinhardt’s short-term study away courses, which are offered over January term, spring break, and Summer term. Students may also participate as a research assistant on an internationally focused faculty research project, intern at an international NGO, or some other substantive, enriching, globally focused learning activity beyond the classroom.
Exceptions to the study away requirement may be made on an individual basis, upon permission from the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
