In an effort to help meet some of the immediate needs of Steinhardt’s full-time PhD students during this time of crisis, we want to assure students whose funding will end at the end of this academic year that we are attempting to address a number of the concerns you have raised.

Support in 2020-2021 (FY21)

Steinhardt offered FY21 Comprehensive Health Insurance to PhD students who are transitioning off 2019-2020 (FY20) fellowship, Research Assistant, and other full-time funding support that is outlined in their offer letters. Steinhardt will also provide Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 Maintenance of Matriculation coverage to these students not otherwise covered by the collective bargaining agreement. Eligible students were contacted by the Office of Doctoral Studies in Summer 2020.

All continuing full-time PhD students still within their funding years will continue as outlined in their initial funding offers, including stipends, health insurance, and tuition awards.

Emergency Fund

To support the immediate needs of full-time doctoral students impacted by COVID-19, Steinhardt established an emergency fund to supplement the NYU COVID Relief Fund

All active full-time PhD students were eligible for limited financial support in Summer 2020. The deadline to request emergency summer funding was Monday, June 15.

Steinhardt established a 2020-2021 Emergency Fund to provide limited financial assistance to continuing full-time PhD students whose Steinhardt Fellowship or Research Assistant support has ended. Eligible students were contacted in August 2020To help ensure a level of equity across departments and programs, Steinhardt prioritized students in those departments who do not have access to substantial finishing grants and other supplemental funding. Unlike other grants and awards, this funding was needs-based rather than competitive.

Deadlines & Extensions

In addition to the financial response, Steinhardt will make accommodations for doctoral students including extensions of doctoral matriculation, flexibility with dissertation filing deadlines and final oral exam scheduling, and flexibility with full-time equivalency criteria (e.g., needed for loans, deferrals, and international student visa status).
