On The Phone: Telephone and Mobile Technology

This course examines the convergence of different technologies and cultures in telephony since the nineteenth century. It surveys the technical development of the telephone, from its roots in telegraphy to radio and portable phones to mobile computing. We will trace the history of 'telephonic principles' such as interaction and universality, and telephony in various social contexts: national and transnational telephone cultures; genres of text messaging; the relationship of communication technology to public, private, and virtual space; and the appropriation of the medium for the purposes of art and activism.

Opera Studies I: European Opera; Origins through the 18th Century

This course asks students to define “What is Opera?” by deconstructing and defining it as an internationally recognized art form rising from and uniquely linked to musical and societal changes and the human condition. Students study the origins and developments of European opera from the 16th century through the 17th century, including national schools and styles, significant musical developments (formal, theoretical), cultural, social, and literary contexts as well as performance practices.

Organic and Sustainable Agriculture Policy

Studying in Washington DC, we undertake a deep study of sustainable and organic agricultural policy, by examining research, advocacy and policymaking. Relying on the expertise of locally based scholars, researchers and advocates, the course will consist of lectures, panel discussions, QandA sessions with experts, and site visits to better understand how these three key components interact. The final part of the course is civic engagement, where students meet their elected officials to advocate their positions related to federal agricultural policy.
