Design I for Non-Majors

This course serves to familiarize the student with the fundamentals of typography. Typography forms the basis of our contemporary communication. Students will gain design abilities based on analogue techniques as well as digital software. The class explores letterform design & moves subsequently to typesetting exercises performed using the letterpress printer & computer. Compositions exploring typography as color, form, & image will be examined for visual impact as well as meaning. The history of typography is incorporated beginning with Guttenberg in the 1400’s through the classic designers of the 17th & 18th centuries, type-design through Russian Constructivism, the Bauhaus, & Modernism to contemporary digital type design.

Design-based Research Methods

Research in education, technology, and other applied areas of social science ofteninvolves studying the combination of the properties of designed interventions and human behavior. This research methods course takes up design-based research methodology and some of its variants including social design experiments and design-based implementation research. Students learn both the epistemology of design-based research methods and techniques for conducting research with these methods, as well as studying when and why the methods are appropriate or inappropriate for particular aims.

Designing Curricula for Teaching Science

Through this course, students engage in a critical examination of science curricula at middle and high school through an exploration of theoretical perspectives informing curriculum design, how socio-cultural factors frame curriculum development and implementation, the role of standards, and developing curricula for equity and inclusion. These elements constitute the intended curriculum. Students also explore the enacted curriculum and what gets implemented, and the learned curriculum, which we can only identify through assessment. Students design, implement and evaluate a curriculum to their specifications and justifications.

Developing Assistive Technology

This multi-disciplinary course allows students from a variety of backgrounds to work together to develop examples of assistive technology. Partnering with outside organization students will work in teams to identify a clinical need relevant to a certain clinical site or client population, and learn the process of developing an idea and following that through the development of a prototype product. The major learning activity is the design and fabrication of a device (piece of equipment, software, etc.) that meets a specific need for a specific person with a disability or a clinic that treats clients with disabilities or a category of people with similar needs as a result of their disability.
