Collaboration Among the Creative Arts

Fundamental principles of art therapy practice will be presented through discussions and case presentations. Students learn the historical development of the profession, its distinction from other disciplines and its commonalities to social sciences. Basic pictorial analyses examine artistic processes and products. Students study the artistic expression across the developmental span. Clinical applications for populations struggling with varied psychological and physiological issues are offered. Each class includes experiential art making to demonstrate interventions.

Collaborative Piano: Techniques and Practicum

Students will analyze collaborative piano repertoire including instrumental chamber music, concertos, songs and arias, gaining an understanding of potential ensemble challenges and interpretive solutions. Text translation and analysis, techniques of orchestral reduction, musical theatre accompanying, and coaching will be investigated using specific methodology readings, listening assignments, class presentations and performances. Each student will give an in-class coaching demonstration at the beginning and end of the semester.

Collecting Fashion Information

This class explores the critical tasks set to librarians, archivists, curators, and
collection managers to collect fashion information and to make it accessible to researchers. It looks at the multiple materialities of fashion beyond the dress object, and it considers museum, library, corporate, and personal collections. It asks students to consider: how, when, and by whom fashion information is collected; the institutional and socio-political frameworks that shape collecting; and the historical record of fashion as an object of constant and necessary revision.

Colloquy in Music Education (Thesis Requirement)

Master’s thesis preparation and presentation class taken for two semesters. First semester students research topics in music education, create an annotated bibliography, complete human subjects ethics training, and prepare a capstone project proposal. Second semester students complete a capstone research project based on reflective practice inquiry and creation methods. Focus on academic writing, research methods, use testing with learners, data analysis, oral presentation techniques. Guest presentations about published papers and theses.
