E.J. Strickland is a globally recognized drummer, composer, and educator whose career bridges the gap between jazz tradition and modern innovation. Since arriving in New York in 1997 to attend The New School for Jazz & Contemporary Music, Strickland has built a massive professional pedigree, performing with legends such as Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson, Vincent Herring, Russell Malone, David Weiss, and Ravi Coltrane, as well as modern visionaries like David Sanchez and Lakecia Benjamin.
As a pedagogue, Strickland is committed to mentoring the next generation of improvisers. He served on the faculty of the prestigious Banff International Jazz Workshop under the artistic direction of Dave Douglas and Vijay Iyer. His clinical work is extensive, featuring residencies at the Eastman School of Music, The University of Manitoba, and The University of Connecticut, along with international educational initiatives through Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Strickland’s educational philosophy emphasizes the "storyteller’s sensibility," balancing technical mastery with melodic expression. Whether leading his own E.J. Strickland Quintet or teaching masterclasses in Europe and Mexico, he remains one of the most respected and articulate voices in jazz education today.
