Joseph T Colonel (JT) is a postdoctoral research fellow at Mount Sinai, developing machine learning algorithms to screen older adults for cognitive impairment based on recordings of their speech. He received his PhD in Computer Science from Queen Mary University of London in 2023, under the supervision of Joshua Reiss in the Centre 4 Digital Music. Over the course of his PhD he developed machine learning algorithms for automatic multitrack mixing and music production behavior modeling, holding internships with Yamaha’s Vocaloid group and Native Instrument’s intelligent audio production team. JT received his B.Eng and M.Eng in Electrical Engineering from the Cooper Union, where his master’s thesis proposed a neural network architecture for lightweight, novel audio effects and sound synthesis.

Outside of academia JT has collaborated with the electronic music label Hyperdub, contributing audio pieces to the label’s 15th anniversary installation in 2019. More recently JT has collaborated with musician Lee Gamble, contributing artificial singing voices to Gamble’s 2023 album Models. JT’s research aims include bringing lightweight, controllable machine learning algorithms to musicians within their workflows.
