Media, Culture, and Communication

Isabelle Freda currently teaches in the Dept. of Media, Culture, and Communication at NYU Steinhardt. She has also taught at Tisch School of the Arts Dept. of Cinema Studies, Hofstra University, NYU in Berlin, Middlebury College, Smith College, and Columbia University, among other venues.

Dr. Freda is currently working on the intersection between eco-politics/animal studies and screen culture. This project further the research she conducted as a Woodward and Bernstein Investigative Fund Fellow at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin on the confluence of feminism and social and environmental justice in the groundbreaking work of Jessica Mitford and Rachel Carson. She is also the recipient of a Bergman Estate Residency, as well as a Richard M. Hunt Fellowship by the American Council on Germany.  

Publications include articles in Cinema/Comparative Cinema (Barcelona), International Journal of Contemporary Iraqi Studies, and NECSUS/European Journal of Media Studies; chapters for the book anthologies Environment and Eco-Politics: History/Theory/Practice (Heffern, ed.), Film and Television After 9-11, and Receptionsgeschte des Nationalsozialismus und seiner Verbrechen. Dr. Freda lives in New York City, where she continues to work to expand the scope of her research and writing to creatively respond to the climate emergency.
