Our Mission
We are an interdisciplinary group of faculty members at NYU Steinhardt who seek to bring together educators, researchers, and students from across the school to promote sustainability-minded scholarship in local and global contexts. For us, sustainability means centering equity and reciprocity in meeting the human, natural, and material needs of present and future generations while actively working to maintain ethical relationships with the environment.
As members of the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, we leverage our interdisciplinary approach, grounded in the social sciences and humanities, and our New York identity as a professional school in and of the city, thinking globally, acting locally - to educate for sustainable communities. We take an equity and justice-driven approach to our work through teaching, research, communication, art, and practice.
It is urgent and necessary to emphasize our commitment to cultivate sustainable communities - a place where people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives feel welcome and safe, where every group has a seat and voice at the decision-making table, and where prosperity is shared. It takes a long term perspective - focusing on anticipating and adapting to change in both the present and the future.

A Conversation with Prof. Chippendale
Prof. Tracy Chippendale reflects on her journey as a clinician-scientist working with older adults, and how their experiences shaped her commitment to aging in place, the role of mobility and public space in health equity, and why sustainability must include safe neighborhoods, parks, and transportation systems.
