Global Media Flows

Dean's Global Honors Seminar

This class examines the dynamics of cultural markets in the configuration of global and regional media flows. It looks in particular at the ways media and culture travel, how media's circulation raises issues about the cultural power of certain media narratives in specific historical, political and social conditions of consumption, and how these narratives shape our understanding of the nation, citizenship, and belonging. We will examine the national, regional, and global media markets that function as sites of struggle for the cultural and political view of the world through known and established institutional pathways for popular culture, including journalism and entertainment, as well as black and grey markets where media and culture circulate through other pathways that are not as immediately visible but make up a significant component of cultural markets and global media flows.

This course satisfies the Cultures & Context Core requirement.
