Spain: Intercultural Perspectives on Teaching and Learning

Graduate Study Abroad

Examine intercultural perspectives on teaching and learning across national borders. Explore the role that class, race, gender, economics, politics, religion, and cultural heritage play in the evolving dynamics of language policy, bilingual and world language education, and international education.

Participants will reflect critically on what it means to develop plurilingual and pluricultural competence by examining the challenges and opportunities facing educators, school leaders, policymakers, and community organizers in Spain. We will study the evolution of Madrid as a multicultural city by considering the impact of broader large-scale events across Spain and the world, such as inclusion efforts that target immigrants and refugees, the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on education and intergroup relationships, racial protests and identity politics, and shifting cultural paradigms.

Participants will participate in several elementary and secondary school and community serving center visits across Madrid. They will conduct first-hand observations and engage with scholars and school leaders to learn about how schools address topics related to culturally responsive teaching and learning, students' intercultural adaptation in multicultural school settings, and more.
