Research Description/Bio:

Berta is a Ph.D. student and IES-PIRT fellow in the Applied Psychology department. In her work, she uses a sociocultural lens to understand the ways in which parents interact with their children and support their schooling and education. With a grounding in systems theory, she considers the educational and cultural systems with which parents interact throughout their children’s lives. Ultimately, Berta is interested in how interactions between parents and systems affect children’s development, motivation for learning, and educational outcomes. Thus, in her research, she draws from frameworks and evidence in a variety of disciplines, such as psychology, sociology, economics, and public policy, and leverages her training in causal inference, psychometrics, and qualitative research.

Throughout her PhD, Berta’s research has focused on school choice, parental engagement, and caregiving in domestic and international contexts. In addition, she has supported partnered research projects with the New York City Public Schools, the Mendoza Department of Education (in Argentina), and the Robin Hood Foundation. Upon graduation, she aims to support evidence-based policy changes that enhance equity and student success in educational systems around the globe. Berta holds a master’s degree in Statistics, Measurement, and Assessments from the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education and a bachelor’s degree in economics and international affairs from Northeastern University.
