Percussion Summer Workshops

The NYU Percussion summer programs are dedicated to bringing the finest and most unique seminars to participants from around the world. Whether it’s having the opportunity to play in the pit of the Metropolitan Opera, performing at National Sawdust with Sandbox Percussion, or sitting in a live Broadway Pit, these are experiences that can only be had at New York University! We offer three summer programs in timpani auditioning, percussion chamber music, and Broadway percussion, all in the epicenter of music culture, New York City.

NYU Broadway Percussion Seminar

A five-day intensive study of the skills, experience, and know-how of the world of Broadway percussion.

Sandbox Percussion Seminar

Through daily rehearsals, coachings, and workshops, participants will develop core chamber music skills, and learn to create a 21st-century musical career.

Artful Timpani Auditioning Seminar

Where timpanists can learn applied auditioning skills, a vital skill set for all instrumental musicians, regardless of career path intention.

The NYU Broadway Percussion Seminar offers classes with special guest percussionists, contractors, and conductors from the world of Broadway. There will be sessions presented on drum set, percussion, mallet percussion, timpani, and Latin percussion, by the percussionists who developed the Broadway books! Participants will have the opportunity to attend two Broadway shows, offering the opportunity for each participant to experience to sit in a live Broadway pit, during an actual Broadway show!

Past Broadway Percussion Seminar presenters have included: John Clancy and Jon Epcar (Spiderman), Charlie Descarfino (Porgy and Bess), Javier Diaz (Guys and Dolls and Tarzan), Wilson Torres (In the Heights), Dan Haskins and David Ratajczak (Mary Poppins), Pablo Rieppi (West Side Story), Erik Charlston (How to Succeed in Business), James Saporito (NYC Ballet and Tony Awards), Valerie Naranjo and Tommy Igoe (The Lion King), Kory Grossman (Broadway's Super Sub), Ben Herman (Film Recording), and many more.

The NYU Sandbox Percussion Seminar offers the opportunity to study, rehearse, and perform side-by-side with Sandbox Percussion. Through daily rehearsals, coachings, and workshops, participants will develop core chamber music skills, and learn to create a 21st-century musical career. Through constant rehearsal preparation alongside artist faculty members and masterclasses with renowned guest artists, students will learn what it feels like to be set free in performance. The art of chamber music making is ultimately about fluency and freedom. Through chamber music, students will learn the ultimate set of skills to not merely survive but thrive in the 21st century.

The Seminar will culminate with a performance at National Sawdust, one of the most iconic contemporary music venues in New York City.

The NYU Artful Timpani Auditioning Seminar is designed around applied auditioning skills for timpanists. It’s been formulated around the reality that auditioning is a vital skill set for all instrumental musicians, regardless of career path intention. Ambitious timpanists from the high school level up through seasoned professionals will necessarily find themselves in high pressure audition situations throughout their careers, whether for a youth orchestra, undergraduate conservatory, summer festival, graduate program, regional orchestra, or a full-time professional orchestra. This process places unique demands on timpanists as a subset of the broader percussion community, and we will leverage the singular locus of timpani-auditioning expertise afforded by NYU faculty and the extended New York City timpani community.

The centerpiece of this workshop is a multi-round mock-audition, with adjudication and detailed feedback provided after every round by timpanists of Lincoln Center including: Jason Haaheim, co-principal timpanist, MET Orchestra, Parker Lee, co-principal timpanist, MET Orchestra, Steven White, assistant timpanist, MET Orchestra, and Ian Sullivan, principal timpanist, New York City Ballet Orchestra. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to experience playing in the METROPOLITAN OPERA pit - an truly one-of-a-kind opportunity.

As a participant in our workshops, you will be mentored by NYU faculty and the finest professionals in the industry. Depending on your interests and focus, your can choose to apply to any combination of our workshops, or attend all of them and spend 3 weeks in New York City immersed in percussion studies!
