This summer, students in the Performing Arts and Visual Arts Administration graduate programs traveled to Berlin and Paris as a part of the Issues and Practices in Arts Administration: The European Context course. Throughout the two-week study abroad experience, students explored the arts and culture scene in these amazing cities through lectures delivered by local experts and academics, on-site visits to world renowned cultural organizations, and conversations with experienced cultural leaders. Students visited the Louvre, the Berlin Philharmonic, Berlin Wall Memorial Museum, Humboldt Forum, Berlin Opera Foundation, Opera Garnier, Philharmonie de Paris, Fondation Louis Vuitton, Musee de Quai Branly, Opera Bastille, the Goethe Institute, and many more cultural institutions. In the course, students were introduced to and discussed many important arts administration issues, including: funding, accessibility, audience development, attitudes towards the arts, the role of the artist in society, heritage preservation, cultural policy, and the creative industries.
