Dr. Michael Iwama, Professor in the Occupational Therapy Doctorate Division, School of Medicine at Duke University, delivered an inspiring lecture at NYU in November 2025 titled From Modern to Post-Modern: The Flow of Theory and Its Meaning for Occupational Therapy.
In this thought-provoking presentation, Dr. Iwama examined the evolution of theoretical perspectives in occupational therapy, encouraging attendees to reflect on how shifting worldviews continue to shape contemporary practice, education, and research. He also shared the personal and scholarly journey that led to the development of the cross-cultural Kawa Model, highlighting the importance of culture, context, and lived experience in understanding meaningful activity and wellbeing. Dr. Iwama’s message challenged us to think beyond traditional frameworks, and to embrace more inclusive approaches that honor the diverse experiences of the individuals and communities we serve.
We are deeply grateful to Dr. Iwama for sharing his wisdom and insights, and for inspiring our faculty, students, and alumni to continue advancing occupational therapy through reflection, innovation, and cultural humility.
