NYU Vocal Pedagogy Outreach empowers students across US.
Since its inception in March 2020, the NYU Vocal Pedagogy Outreach Program has made a significant impact in engaging culturally, geographically, and economically underserved communities throughout the United States. The initiative has successfully reached over 1,800 student participants across 27 distinct communities, showcasing the power of music and individual expression to foster connection and understanding.
Over the past five years, 61 dedicated graduate student instructors have worked with secondary music programs across the country to address each community's unique needs. Through a series of devised workshops focusing on vocal health, wellness, efficiency, and sustainability, the program empowers participants by enhancing their vocal skills, promoting self-expression, and reinforcing the therapeutic benefits of music. Participants come from diverse backgrounds, each bringing their unique stories and voices to the forefront, enriching the program's outreach and impact.
"The vocal pedagogy program at NYU is unique because it explores the intersection of psychological health, the arts, and communication," says Dr. Justin John Moniz, Associate Director of Vocal Performance and Coordinator of Vocal Pedagogy. "Our work enables us to build bridges and connect people around the globe by way of music and individual expression."
The Yamaha Corporation and Musical America have praised the success of the NYU Vocal Pedagogy Outreach Program. Now preparing for its sixth season, the program remains committed to fostering inclusivity and promoting the transformative power of music in every corner of our society.
