Undergraduate Semester Abroad

Study at NYU BUENOS AIRES

The Education Studies program and NYU Buenos Aires share a commitment to human rights and social justice, and you’ll see that reflected in your experience abroad. Spending a semester in Buenos Aires gives students the unique opportunity to deepen their learning about education in one of the world’s most culturally vibrant and politically active cities. Buenos Aires boasts an unparalleled location filled with music, art, theater, and cuisine, as well as widespread local participation in politics.

  • Gain experience working in diverse local communities and organizations across the city. You’ll have extensive internship and volunteer opportunities that focus on education and advocacy for a multitude of human rights.  Please note, Spanish language proficiency is often required.
  • Experience an unparalleled location filled with music, art, theatre, cuisine, and widespread local participation in politics.
  • Immerse yourself in a historical and contemporary tradition of community engagement. You’ll continue your learning in and out of the classroom with coursework and a well-developed internship program.

Buenos Aires: Courses and Electives

Your experience at NYU Buenos Aires can bring you closer to completing your degree, while providing you with new, global perspectives.

  • We offer the required Survey of Developmental Psychology course (APSY-UE 9150-001), enhanced with content specific to Argentina and Latin America.
  • You may also choose from a variety of electives that enable you to learn through examples on the ground. Enter a K–12 classroom in Buenos Aires, investigate current events in the media, and explore art in diverse locations across the city through these highlighted courses:

    • Global Media Seminar: Latin America (MCC-UE 9455-001)
    • Street Art & Politics (IDSEM-UG 9150-001)

Study at NYU ACCRA

During your semester at NYU Accra, you’ll experience the city itself as your classroom. Famed for its crafts, music, and welcoming people, contemporary Ghana is a bridge between an ancient heritage and the new global community.

  • Experience the diversity and complexity of a country whose history has transformed Africa and the world.
  • Investigate questions of international development and education policy.
  • Explore how local and international actors think about the role of education in international development, and how that translates into practice.
  • Learn about the practical challenges and opportunities of implementing education programming in developing countries. Which programs and approaches are most successful, and why?

Accra: Courses and Electives

Continue your Education Studies learning and expand your education knowledge while gaining experiences you can’t find anywhere else.

  • We encourage you to take Human Development (APSY-UA 9020), which fulfills a major requirement. Students will have the opportunity to visit K–12 classrooms in Accra.  
  • You also have a variety of electives to choose from, many available exclusively at NYU Accra and focusing on experiences in Ghana and Africa. The following courses include an education component and teach through examples on the ground:
    • Community Psychology (PSYCH-UA 9036)
    • Society, Culture and Modernization in Ghana (SCA-UA 9776)
    • Documenting the African City (SCA-UA 9124)
    • African Women Speak (COLIT-UA 9666)

Student Life

Our on-site staff will provide support for you during your time abroad. We’ll help you connect with your host culture throughout your stay with orientation, trips, student clubs, and language exchanges. Housing is guaranteed to all students and will vary by location.

Further Opportunities

We offer many core, liberal arts, and content elective courses abroad that allow you to explore your interests across continents and cultures.

The internship programs at NYU Buenos Aires and NYU Accra are many students’ favorite parts of their time abroad. Our faculty and staff have developed relationships with numerous community- and school-based organizations in order to match your interests and skills with a local group that will allow you to gain hands-on experience and build strong relationships in the city. Students often enjoy their internship work so much that they choose to take part in the volunteer program that the site staff have developed as well.

No matter where you choose to spend a semester abroad, you’ll gain new experiences and exposure to a wider world.
