Set in interwar Vienna, Die Fledermaus follows Falke’s elaborate New Year’s Eve revenge on his friend Eisenstein. Delayed from serving house arrest, Eisenstein secretly attends Prince Orlofsky’s grand party, unaware that Falke has also invited his chambermaid, Adele, and disguised his wife, Rosalinde, as a Hungarian countess. Chaos ensues as Eisenstein flirts with the “countess,” who outsmarts him by stealing his prized watch. At the party, Eisenstein unwittingly boasts about the prank that earned Falke the nickname “Dr. Bat.” The night ends in a dramatic reveal at the jail, where Falke’s plot is exposed, Rosalinde reveals her disguise, and all toast to the comedy of errors with champagne and laughter.
