Partnering with Carnegie Hall for its city-wide Nuestros Sonidos celebration, the NYU Contemporary Music Ensemble and Screen Scoring Program present a live-to-picture performance of José María Velasco Maidana’s 1930 silent film masterpiece, Wara Wara, the sole surviving work from Bolivia's silent film era. This captivating “super production" tells the tale of a forbidden romance between an Inca princess and a Spanish conquistador, and is accompanied here by the world premiere of an original orchestral score, co-composed by the junior class of NYU's Screen Scoring Program. Performed by the NYUContemporary Music Ensemble under the direction of Jonathan Haas, this new score stays historically faithful to the film and era, celebrating the vibrant sounds, innovative rhythms, and rich cultural traditions of LatinAmerica, which are central to Carnegie Hall’s Nuestros Sonidos series.
