The 45-credit MA in Educational Theatre and Social Studies Education (Initial Certification) enables prospective social studies teachers to leverage new modes of artistic expression to explore a period of history, historical concepts, and historical debates through the use of drama-based frameworks. Blending hands-on, innovative training in both social studies education and educational theatre, this program equips you to evaluate key ideas in primary source documents or historical texts through the use of interactive dramatic strategies.
Core Course Sequence
The MA program features a social studies content core exploring key debates in world and United States history. You’ll gain pedagogical training in best practices in teaching and learning, specialized instruction in utilizing drama techniques in the classroom, and extensive experience student teaching. The program culminates in a curriculum project shaped by your experiences in the student teaching practicum.
Additional Requirements to be recommended for NY State Teaching Certification in Theatre, All grades, and Social Studies, Grades 7-12:
- Students must successfully complete the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations. Scores must be submitted to the State Education Department before it will consider issuing a certificate to teach in the public schools of New York State.
- Students must complete 150 hours of fieldwork in approved educational settings prior to student teaching.
