Curriculum

MA, Educational Leadership, Politics, and Advocacy

This 36-credit Master of Arts program prepares you to work toward social and educational equity through leadership, politics, policy, and advocacy positions. As a graduate, you will have opportunities to work in child, youth, and community advocacy organizations, policy and research centers, public, private, charter, and independent schools, as well as international and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).

Core Course Sequence

You’ll have considerable flexibility in creating a program of study that aligns with your purposes and goals. You’ll explore multiple paths for analyzing and critically assessing issues of leadership and policy at the federal, state, and local levels, while also learning to employ various approaches to inquiry and research. The program’s coursework emphasizes themes of advancing equity and social justice and understanding the needs and experiences of low-income children and youth, as well as implications for leadership both within and outside educational settings. As part of the program, you will participate in continuous field-based experience, including an internship with community-based advocacy organizations, schools, or research centers. These placements consider your interests, and additional field-based opportunities are woven into coursework throughout the program. The program culminates in a field-based internship with an associated presentation and project, allowing you to apply your theoretical training in practice.
