Grounded in applied linguistic and educational theories, the program engages students in questions of language pedagogy, policy, assessment, and discourse in a wide range of educational settings.

Official Degree Title
Doctoral students receive rigorous training in current research methodologies, foundational theories, and practices in applied linguistics, TESOL, and bi/multilingual education while gaining expertise in their own areas of inquiry. Working closely with faculty mentors, students hone their research skills and develop their research agenda, while preparing to conduct impactful research in diverse educational and social contexts, locally and globally.
Students can leverage the interdisciplinary expertise of both faculty in our program and throughout NYU Steinhardt to enrich their research process. Our faculty’s expertise spans TESOL, bilingual and world language education, language assessment, language policy, language teacher education, critical participatory action research, intersections of culture, identity and power, discourse analysis, and applied linguistics, with a shared emphasis on equity, justice, and impact.
Graduates of the program are prepared to advance knowledge in the field and pursue careers as university faculty, educational researchers, curriculum specialists, educational administrators, and leaders in multilingual and multicultural education worldwide.

Funding for Full-Time PhD Students
NYU Steinhardt offers a competitive fellowship package for all full-time PhD students, including international students. Fellowship funding requires that students fulfill a semesterly research requirement, complete various academic requirements, and maintain good academic standing.
