Dr. Shuang Fu is an Assistant Professor of TESOL and Childhood Education in the Department of Teaching and Learning at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. She holds a Ph.D. in Language and Literacy Education from the University of Georgia, and an M.A. in TESOL from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
Her research lies at the intersection of bilingual education, education policy and practice, immigration education, and equity in multilingual and multicultural contexts. Drawing on critical and humanizing qualitative methodologies, Dr. Fu examines how language education policies and ideologies shape teachers’ pedagogical choices and professional agency. She is particularly interested in the role of teachers as policy actors and the ways educational systems can either reproduce or challenge inequities for multilingual learners. The overarching goal of her scholarship is to amplify the voices and lived experiences of minoritized students and their teachers, informing more inclusive, justice-oriented policies and practices in schools and communities.
Prior to joining NYU, Dr. Fu taught Chinese at the K-12 level and ESOL teaching methods for preservice teachers at the postsecondary level. She also partnered with school districts to support multilingual learners and their teachers, particularly in under-resourced communities. These experiences deeply inform her research and teaching, grounding her academic work in the realities of multilingual classrooms and the lived experiences of educators and learners navigating complex sociopolitical contexts.
